1968 Mayısında gerçekleşen Paris öğrenci olaylarının amacına ulaşamamasının ardından, hayal kırıklığı içindeki bir kuşağın umutsuzluğunu ve yeniden şekillenen cinsiyetler arası ilişkileri, ağırlıklı olarak ana karakterin monologları ve çevresindekilerle girdiği diyaloglar üzerinden anlatır. Baş karakter Alexandre, son derece egoist, pozcu ve soğuk, yirmili yaşlarının sonlarında bir gençtir. Kendisinden yaşça büyük, butik sahibi Marie ile yaşar. İşsiz ve parasızdır. Zamanının çoğunu elinde bir kitap , Paris sokak ve kafelerinde kız peşinde dolaşarak geçirir. Aşık olduğunu ve evlenmek istediğini açıkladığı eski sevgilisi Gilberte’in başkasıyla evleneceğini öğrenen Alexandre, aynı gün, bir kafede gördüğü genç Polonyalı hemşire Veronika ile bir ilişkiye başlar.
